 Our Story

The Mesabi East Environmental Education Center (ME3C) was created to support the Mesabi East School District’s vision of inspiring critical-thinking, community-minded, high-achieving individuals. From the beginning, the goal was simple but powerful: build a place where students could learn by doing—through hands-on experiences connected to the real world.

Founded in 2018, ME3C began as a program focused on helping special education students explore plant science in a meaningful, skill-based environment. What started as a small idea quickly grew into something bigger. In order to create a true learning space, ME3C repurposed a 50+ year-old floral and greenhouse business, transforming it into an active educational center where students and the community could grow, create, and learn together.

Today, ME3C continues to evolve into a unique hub for environmental education, agriculture, sustainability, and Farm to School learning on Minnesota’s Iron Range. Students develop practical life skills by learning how to grow food, care for plants, preserve harvests, and prepare meals, all while gaining confidence through real responsibilities and teamwork. These experiences support academic learning, career readiness, and long-term independence.

ME3C also brings learning beyond one classroom or program. Through cross-team teaching and collaboration, students in Culinary Arts, Graphic Arts, Industrial Technology, and Business have opportunities to connect their coursework to real projects—building products, supporting events, creating promotional materials, and learning what it takes to operate a community-focused program.

Just as important as student learning is the way ME3C brings people together. Community involvement is at the heart of the Center’s success. Volunteers regularly support the greenhouse, community members participate in classes and seasonal events, and local partnerships continue to help ME3C grow its impact. This multi-generational approach creates a welcoming space where students, families, and community members can learn side by side and strengthen the community through shared experiences.

ME3C has been recognized at the local, state, and federal level for its innovation and community value. The program has received honors including the Minnesota Rural Education Association Innovation Award, 8th District Horticultural Society Community Service Recognition, and the St. Louis County Public Health Achievement Award.

ME3C is more than a greenhouse—it’s a place where education becomes real, where growth happens in more ways than one, and where students and community members help build something lasting together.
