About Us

Mesabi East is a district built on unity, resilience, and community pride. Our story is one of collaboration. The district was formed through two consolidations — first bringing together Aurora, Hoyt Lakes, and the surrounding area, and later uniting Aurora–Hoyt Lakes with Biwabik to create Mesabi East. What began as separate communities with shared values became one district with a stronger, unified vision for the future.

Today, Mesabi East serves approximately 8,000 residents across the three communities of Aurora, Biwabik, and Hoyt Lakes. Each town brings its own history and character, but together they form a close-knit district that takes great pride in its schools. Our size allows us to offer meaningful opportunities while still maintaining the personal connections that matter most. Students are known by name. Families are recognized. Staff members build lasting relationships.

Geographically, Mesabi East is bordered by neighboring districts including St. Louis County, Lake Superior, Duluth, Virginia, and Eveleth-Gilbert. Located on Minnesota’s Iron Range, our community is rooted in a tradition of hard work, perseverance, and pride — values that continue to shape our students today.

Academically, Mesabi East provides a continuous learning experience from early childhood through graduation. We focus on building strong foundations in literacy, mathematics, science, and the arts while also preparing students for life beyond high school. Career exploration, technical education pathways, college preparation, and real-world learning experiences are all part of the journey. Students are encouraged to discover their strengths, set goals, and pursue futures that fit their talents and interests.

Beyond the classroom, Mesabi East offers a wide range of extracurricular opportunities. Athletics, fine arts, clubs, leadership programs, and community service allow students to grow in confidence and character. Participation matters here. We believe learning extends beyond textbooks — it happens on the stage, on the court, in the shop, in the greenhouse, and through service to others.
