Indigenous Education

Culture. Connection. Community.

Mesabi East Indigenous Education supports Native American students in Pre K–12 by strengthening cultural identity, building relationships, and creating meaningful learning experiences that connect students to their heritage. Our program provides culturally responsive opportunities that encourage student success in school and beyond.

The Indigenous Education program is guided in partnership with our American Indian Parent Advisory Committee (AIPAC), which helps support programming and provides families with a voice in the goals and direction of Indigenous Education at Mesabi East. Families with students enrolled in the program are encouraged to participate and become involved with AIPAC.

Throughout the school year, students may take part in cultural activities, hands-on learning, and educational outings both in and out of school. Planned experiences may include attending pow wows sponsored by the Fond du Lac and Bois Forte reservations, career exploration opportunities, cultural and historical learning experiences, and traditional skill-building activities. Students may also have opportunities to participate in projects such as beading, ribbon skirt or shirt making, drum making, wild rice education and processing, sugar bush activities, fishing, and more.

We look forward to partnering with families to support students as they learn, grow, and connect their culture to everyday life.
