Bent Willow Chairs/Rustic Furniture, Instructor, John Bajda
TBD (rescheduled date pending) - 8 AM - 4 PM : Orientation Meeting _____________________ - 5:30 PM
ME School - Room #295
$75 (1 chair, 2 participants may work on 1 piece). Can make your choice of bent willow, rocker or garden bench.
John has been teaching rustic furniture and bent willow classes since about 2000. He has been a hobby woodworker for many years, and started building the rustic furniture after retiring from teaching for 32 years in McGregor High School. After making a few projects, he was asked to teach a class for community education at McGregor School, and after teaching the first class there, it expanded to teaching classes in many of the community education programs in the area. Classes have been held as far away as Hinkley and also the Folk School in Ely. His rustic furniture building is not done as a business, but as a hobby with most projects which he makes, given away to friends or donated for benefits.
Most of the classes are held in two sessions. The first session, (usually about 2 hours) is a discussion of materials used, identification of willow or other sticks, where to harvest, tools needed, and then a demonstration of a project constructed for the class.
After the demonstration session, the class participants are given a period of time(usually a week or two) to decide on a project, collect their material and then return for a one day work session. Most participants can finish their projects in 5 to 7 hours.
Most tools are provided by the instructor, but class participants are asked to bring tools they may need if they have them. We encourage all participants to work with a partner. Usually the partners participate in the classes with no fee. Partners make it much easier to build projects since it is pretty difficult to bend the willow for a chair without someone holding the end. It also makes the class more enjoyable by having a partner to share the knowledge with.
